Lights? Camera? Action! Despite stormy skies, your Grand Final sparkled on Sydney’s stunning harbour, as the 2008 Australian Idol was crowned – Wes Carr!
What a journey this year has been. We scoured the country to bring you a fresh and fantastic Final 12, and each week these amazing singers kept raising the bar in an effort to win the crown. Tonight, a veritable feast of delights was on offer for the Idol fan, as we revisited highlights from the show – including, of course, seeing your Final 12 perform onstage together again!
Bam! With a little help from a huge choir, eight drummers, and a troupe of colourful dancers (including some familiar faces from So You Think You Can Dance!), Jonny, Brooke, Sophie, Madam, Tom, Thanh, Roshani, Chrislyn, Teale and Mark sizzled onstage to the opening number, ‘Can You Feel It’. The excitement factor was sealed as your Final Two, Luke and Wes, made a rockstar entrance onstage in two brand new Mazdas!
As messages of support poured in from celeb guest mentors Chris Isaak, Tina Arena, Cyndi Lauper, Guy Sebastian and more, the Final Two got the party started with a power-packed version of ‘Times Like These’! We then took a trip down memory lane, recapping on how we found each of the fab Final 12 in this year’s trip round the continent.
He left the show with the powerful ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, and now Finalist Number Three, Mark Spano, showed us his performances smarts and straight-up sex appeal with his cover of the Kings of Leon ‘Sex on Fire’. We haven’t heard the last of Spano!
Next was Idol royalty, spunkrat Jess Mauboy, with her new single ‘Burn’ from the album Been Waiting. Miss Mauboy is certainly one of the success stories of Australian Idol, and her performance certainly set the stage on fire!
The boys were back in town with their group song ‘Higher Ground’: Mark, Luke, Tom, Jonny, Thanh, Teale and Wes slammed it home!
Sophie covered their smash single as part of Aussie Hits week, but now they were here in the flesh – superstars The Potbellez paid us a visit to keep the massive crowd warmed up.
Looking super-glam, the sauciest, spunkiest gals in town were entertaining the crowd next with the big ballad, ‘I’m Every Woman’.
Next up was the ARIA award-winning Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson with their chart-topping ‘Rattlin’ Bones’, title track from their new album.
As fireworks exploded majestically over the Sydney Opera House, all Final 12 were back onstage with ‘Viva La Vida’; a truly memorable moment in the final countdown of Australian Idol 2008.
It scored him a touchdown in Michael Jackson week, and now, the moon-walking Wes Carr was back in a sparkly silver jacket, with the crowd-pleasing ‘Black or White’.
The shearer from Young has been making us feel alright for the whole series, so what better song for Luke Dickens to cover than Joe Cocker’s ‘Feelin’ Alright’?
And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. To a salivating crowd, James and Andrew opened the little blue envelope that would change the life story of Like or Wes forever. And the winner of Australian Idol 2008 was… Wes Carr! As the crowd roared their approval, the grinning Wes made their way to the stage to perform the winner’s single, ‘You’, topping off yet another fantastic series of Idol.
