Macho Does Not Prove Mucho

We heart the latest trend in teen boy pin-ups: the Awkward Adorable.

Juno: “You’re so cool and you don’t even have to try”

Bleeker: “I try really hard actually.”

Your honor, the jury has reached our decision. From Michael Cera to Seth Cohen to Nick Jonas, shy guys are our new fly guys. Gone are the days where macho mutterings of the ‘me Tarzan, you Jane’ type pass as flirtation. The new Boy We Love is articulate, sweet, and let’s face it, just a little bit nerdy. He’s the Awkward Adorable guy – and we can’t get enough.

While there’s nothing wrong with being confident and self-assured, this is something the macho footy-playing types have taken a bit too far. Difference is great – belching repeatedly then laughing hysterically is just not. Where the boofy blokey types celebrate masculinity as a big boys club where girls are some kind of trophy to try and take home, the Awkward Adorable genuinely respects and likes women as equals, as well as potential snuggle buddies. And they kind of fear us. Which is kind of fun.

How to Spot an Awkward Adorable honey.

Look: Geek chic, all the way. Look for black-rimmed glasses, old-man cardigans, skinny black jeans, second-hand t-shirts and button-up plaid shirts. In other words, he dresses like Rob Moran.

How to dress around him: The Awkward Adorable guys have a soft spot for pretty vintage. Think demure kitten heels, sweet floral prints and hemlines that fall beneath the knee.

Personality: The Awkward Adorable guy has a rich and complex personality masked by intense shyness. To the casual observer, he may come across as simply boring or even aloof. Don’t be fooled! The Awkward Adorable feels like he doesn’t fit in to a society where Entourage is a blueprint for boys, so he keeps his thoughtful, intelligent, caring and quirky personality under wraps.

How to get on his radar: He’ll be put off by girls who come on too strong. Don’t feel like you have to fill in gaps he’s leaving with OTT flirting – enjoy getting to know him slowly, like a wild animal you’re teaching to trust you.

Hobbies and Fave Activities: Will almost certainly involve one of the following: computers, collectibles, superheroes, obscure indie bands and/ or old martial arts movies.

How to impress him: Having an interest – no matter how small – in any of the above. If you know Batman doesn’t actually have superpowers or can namecheck The Shins or Los Campesinos with ease, you’re so in.

Previous GF Experience: Extremely limited, and his expectations of such come from exclusively from song lyrics. Given this, you may have to gently nudge him along as he’ll be too shy to start Facebooking you straight away. Don’t be afraid to take the reigns if you’re getting interested vibes but no follow through.

How to get him to fall for you: The Awkward Adorable is just so thrilled to be hanging with a cool chick like you, simply being yourself is the fastest way to his heart. He’s after a sweet girl he can really get to know – if you’re looking for a harmless commitment-free flirt, best keep moving.

Hotties and Notties.

Hot: A beach date where he doesn’t hold your hand for half an hour because he’s too nervous.

Not: A beach date that involves watching him surf for five hours.

Hot: Catching lo-fi indie rock together and drinking lemonade.

Not: Taking him to the hospital after he breaks his arm crowd-surfing.

About Georgia

I'm a young adult novelist with a weakness for hot nerds and cheese platters, not necessarily in that order. I am currently working on my third novel. I'm pretty excited about having just turned 30 because it means I can justify spending a lot of time thinking about homewares.
