Eight Things To Do Before Winter Hits

Jack Frost is almost here! Time to have fun in the sun while you still can!

Have a late afternoon swim. It’s dark and cold by 5.30pm in winter so celebrate the end of the warmer months with a late afternoon dip. If it’s already too cold where you are, find an indoor heated pool and let the warm water totally relax you. Mmmm – bliss!

Host an outdoor movie night. The outdoor cinemas have shut up shop by now, but that doesn’t mean outdoor movie nights are over – DIY it! All you need is a TV with an extension cord, a backyard, lots of cushions and ta-dah! Instant (and free!) outdoor cinema! Don’t forget insect repellant and plenty of popcorn – keep it healthy by making your own with unsalted butter, rather than the trés unhealthy microwave kind.

Buy next season’s cozzie on sale. If you’re a babe on a budget (and let’s face it, who isn’t?) then you can save a packet picking up your next pair of swimmers in the end-of-summer sales. Cozzies can get expensive, but are usually heavily reduced around April and May. The same goes for summer dresses, sandals, singlet tops – you name it! Slipping on a pair of short shorts may be the farthest thing from your mind right now, but come next summer you’ll be stoked you picked them up at 70% off! Hint: Check missyconfidential.com.au to find out where the sales are in your hood!

Watch the sunset with your boy. When it comes to a great show, you don’t need to fork out $100 for front row seats – nature puts on a daily spectacular spectacle for free! Watching the sunset is totally relaxing in a Zen kind of way – not to mention oh-so-romantic! Pack a little picnic of all your fave foods, grab an old blanket and head up to a good vantage point in your neighbourhood. Enjoy the changing colours of the landscape and the slow, peaceful twilight that sets in afterwards – it’s the next best thing to our fave movie!

Overdose on Ben and Jerrys. As if you need an excuse! It’s too cold to eat ice cream in winter so enjoy some B+Js while you still can! We’re gaa-gaa over Chubby Hubby – what is it about peanut butter-filled chocolate-covered pretzels that’s just so damn delicious?

Hit up your local waterpark. You’re never too old to enjoy a wet and wild waterpark! This one definitely calls for the more the merrier, so put on your leadership cap and get a crew together. Waterparks are the best of both worlds – all the adrenaline of a funpark combined with the cool-off effect of water! If you live too far from one, you can DIY a slip ‘n’ slide at home, or organise a day of sunbathing and frolicking at your local pool.

Cozify your bedroom. As the temperature starts to drop, so does the amount of time you spend outside. Winter means hibernation, so get ready to start spending a LOT of time in your bedroom. Cozify it by making it a space you and your friends look forward to hanging out in. Make sure you have plenty of cushions, blankets, DVDs, books, mags, boardgames – whatever it takes to bring to party back to yours!

Throw an end-of-summer house party. Get everyone to wear their sunnies and swimmers, crank up the Beach Boys, and get some tropical punch going. Viola! You’ve got the Best Party Ever happening!

About Georgia

I'm a young adult novelist with a weakness for hot nerds and cheese platters, not necessarily in that order. I am currently working on my third novel. I'm pretty excited about having just turned 30 because it means I can justify spending a lot of time thinking about homewares.
